1EN: I SPEAK the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost:
1FR: Je dis la vérité dans le Christ, je ne mens point, ma conscience m’en rend témoignage par l’Esprit-Saint :
2EN: That I have great sadness, and continual sorrow in my heart.
2FR: j’éprouve une grande tristesse et j’ai au cœur une douleur incessante.
3EN: For I wished myself to be an anathema from Christ, for my brethren, who are my kinsmen according to the flesh,
3FR: Car je souhaiterais d’être moi-même anathème, loin du Christ, pour mes frères, mes parents selon la chair,
4EN: Who are Israelites, to whom belongeth the adoption as of children, and the glory, and the testament, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises:
4FR: qui sont Israélites, à qui appartiennent l’adoption, et la gloire, et les alliances, et la Loi, et le culte, et les promesses,
5EN: Whose are the fathers, and of whom is Christ, according to the flesh, who is over all things, God blessed for ever. Amen.
5FR: et les patriarches, et de qui est issu le Christ selon la chair, lequel est au-dessus de toutes choses, Dieu, béni éternellement. Amen !
6EN: Not as though the word of God hath miscarried. For all are not Israelites that are of Israel:
6FR: Ce n’est pas que la parole de Dieu ait failli. Car tous ceux qui descendent d’Israël ne sont pas le véritable Israël,
7EN: Neither are all they that are the seed of Abraham, children; but in Isaac shall thy seed be called:
7FR: et pour être la postérité d’Abraham, tous ne sont pas ses enfants ; mais " C’est la postérité d’Isaac qui sera dite la postérité ",
8EN: That is to say, not they that are the children of the flesh, are the children of God; but they, that are the children of the promise, are accounted for the seed.
8FR: c’est-à-dire que ce sont les enfants de la promesse qui sont regardés comme la postérité d’Abraham.
9EN: For this is the word of promise: According to this time will I come; and Sara shall have a son.
9FR: Voici en effet les termes d’une promesse : " Je reviendrai à cette même époque, et Sara aura un fils. "
10EN: And not only she. But when Rebecca also had conceived at once, of Isaac our father.
10FR: Et non seulement Sara ; mais il en fut encore ainsi de Rebecca qui conçut deux enfants d’un seul homme, d’Isaac notre père ;
11EN: For when the children were not yet born, nor had done any good or evil (that the purpose of God, according to election, might stand,)
11FR: car, avant même que les enfants fussent nés, et qu’ils eussent rien fait, ni bien ni mal, — afin que le dessein électif de Dieu fût reconnu ferme,
12EN: Not of works, but of him that calleth, it was said to her: The elder shall serve the younger.
12FR: non en vertu des œuvres, mais par le choix de celui qui appelle, — il fut dit à Rebecca : " L’aîné sera assujetti au plus jeune, "
13EN: As it is written: Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.
13FR: selon qu’il est écrit : " J’ai aimé Jacob, et j’ai haï Esaü. "
14EN: What shall we say then? Is there injustice with God? God forbid.
14FR: Que dirons-nous donc ? Y a-t-il de l’injustice en Dieu ? Loin de là !
15EN: For he saith to Moses: I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy; and I will shew mercy to whom I will shew mercy.
15FR: Car il dit à Moïse : "Je ferai miséricorde à qui je veux faire miséricorde, et j’aurai compassion de qui je veux avoir compassion. "
16EN: So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
16FR: Ainsi donc l’élection ne dépend ni de la volonté, ni des efforts, mais de Dieu qui fait miséricorde.
17EN: For the scripture saith to Pharao: To this purpose have I raised thee, that I may shew my power in thee, and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.
17FR: Car l’Écriture dit à Pharaon : " Je t’ai suscité, pour montrer en toi ma puissance, et pour que mon nom soit célébré sur toute la terre. "
18EN: Therefore he hath mercy on whom he will; and whom he will, he hardeneth.
18FR: Ainsi il fait miséricorde à qui il veut, et il endurcit qui il veut.
19EN: Thou wilt say therefore to me: Why doth he then find fault? for who resisteth his will?
19FR: Tu me diras : De quoi donc Dieu se plaint-il encore ? Car qui peut s’opposer à sa volonté ?
20EN: O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it: Why hast thou made me thus?
20FR: Mais plutôt, ô homme, qui es-tu pour contester avec Dieu ? Est-ce que le vase d’argile dit à celui qui l’a façonné : Pourquoi m’as-tu fait ainsi ?
21EN: Or hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump, to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
21FR: Le potier n’est-il pas maître de son argile, pour faire de la même masse un vase d’honneur et un vase d’ignominie ?
22EN: What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath, fitted for destruction,
22FR: Et si Dieu, voulant montrer sa colère et faire connaître sa puissance, a supporté avec une grande patience des vases de colère, formés pour la perdition,
23EN: That he might shew the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he hath prepared unto glory?
23FR: et s’il a voulu faire connaître aussi les richesses de sa gloire à l’égard des vases de miséricorde qu’il a d’avance préparés pour la gloire,
24EN: Even us, whom also he hath called, nor only of the Jews, but also of the Gentiles.
24FR: envers nous, qu’il a appelés, non seulement d’entre les Juifs, mais encore d’entre les Gentils, où est l’injustice ?
25EN: As in Osee he saith: I will call that which was not my people, my people; and her that was not beloved, beloved; and her that had not obtained mercy, one that hath obtained mercy.
25FR: C’est ainsi qu’il dit dans Osée : " Celui qui n’était pas mon peuple, je l’appellerai mon peuple et celle qui n’était pas la bien-aimée, je l’appellerai bien-aimée. "
26EN: And it shall be, in the place where it was said unto them, You are not my people; there they shall be called the sons of the living God.
26FR: " Et dans le lieu où il leur fut dit : Vous n’êtes pas mon peuple, là même on les appellera fils du Dieu vivant. "
27EN: And Isaias crieth out concerning Israel: If the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved.
27FR: D’autre part, Isaïe s’écrie au sujet d’Israël : " Quand le nombre des fils d’Israël serait comme le sable de la mer, un faible reste seulement sera sauvé. "
28EN: For he shall finish his word, and cut it short in justice; because a short word shall the Lord make upon the earth.
28FR: Car accomplissant sa parole pleinement et promptement, il l’exécutera sur la terre [en toute justice].
29EN: And as Isaias foretold: Unless the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been made as Sodom, and we had been like unto Gomorrha.
29FR: Et comme Isaïe l’avait prédit : " Si le Seigneur des armées ne nous avait laissé un rejeton, nous serions devenus comme Sodome, et nous aurions été semblables à Gomorrhe. "
30EN: What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who followed not after justice, have attained to justice, even the justice that is of faith.
30FR: Que dirons- donc ? Que les Gentils, qui ne cherchaient pas la justice, on atteint la justice, mais la justice qui vient de la foi,
31EN: But Israel, by following after the law of justice, is not come unto the law of justice.
31FR: tandis qu’Israël, qui cherchait une loi de justice, n’est point venu à une loi de justice.
32EN: Why so? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were of works. For they stumbled at the stumblingstone.
32FR: Pourquoi ? parce qu’il a cherché à l’atteindre, non par la foi, mais comme s’il avait pu arriver par les œuvres. Il s’est heurté contre la pierre d’achoppement,
33EN: As it is written: Behold I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and a rock of scandal; and whosoever believeth in him shall not be confounded.
33FR: selon qu’il est écrit : " Voici que je mets en Sion une pierre d’achoppement et un rocher de scandale, mais quiconque croit en lui ne sera pas confondu. "
