1EN: AND it came to pass, that in those days there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that the whole world should be enrolled.
1FR: Or, en ces jours-là, fut publié un édit de César Auguste, pour le recensement de toute la terre.
2EN: This enrolling was first made by Cyrinus, the governor of Syria.
2FR: Ce premier recensement eut lieu pendant que Quirinius était gouverneur de Syrie.
3EN: And all went to be enrolled, every one into his own city.
3FR: Et tous allaient se faire recenser, chacun dans sa ville.
4EN: And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem: because he was of the house and family of David,
4FR: Joseph aussi monta de Galilée, de la ville de Nazareth, en Judée, à la ville de David, qui s’appelle Bethléem, parce qu’il était de la maison et de la famille de David,
5EN: To be enrolled with Mary his espoused wife, who was with child.
5FR: pour se faire recenser avec Marie son épouse, qui était enceinte.
6EN: And it came to pass, that when they were there, her days were accomplished, that she should be delivered.
6FR: Or, pendant qu’ils étaient là, le temps où elle devait enfanter s’accomplit,
7EN: And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him up in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
7FR: et elle mit au monde son fils premier-né, l’emmaillota et le coucha dans une crèche, parce qu’il n’y avait pas de place pour eux dans l’hôtellerie.
8EN: And there were in the same country shepherds watching, and keeping the night watches over their flock.
8FR: Il y avait dans la même région des bergers qui vivaient aux champs et qui veillaient la nuit sur leur troupeau.
9EN: And behold an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the brightness of God shone round about them; and they feared with a great fear.
9FR: Un ange du Seigneur parut auprès d’eux et la gloire du Seigneur les enveloppa de clarté, et ils furent saisis d’une grande crainte.
10EN: And the angel said to them: Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, that shall be to all the people:
10FR: Mais l’ange leur dit : « Ne craignez point, car je vous annonce une nouvelle qui sera pour tout le peuple une grande joie :
11EN: For, this day, is born to you a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord, in the city of David.
11FR: il vous est né aujourd’hui, dans la ville de David, un Sauveur, qui est le Christ Seigneur.
12EN: And this shall be a sign unto you. You shall find the infant wrapped in swaddling clothes, and laid in a manger.
12FR: Et voici ce qui vous en sera le signe : vous trouverez un nouveau-né emmailloté et couché dans une crèche. »
13EN: And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army, praising God, and saying:
13FR: Tout à coup se joignit à l’ange une troupe de la milice céleste, louant Dieu et disant :
14EN: Glory to God in the highest; and on earth peace to men of good will.
14FR: « Gloire, dans les hauteurs, à Dieu ! Et, sur terre, paix chez les hommes de bon vouloir ! »
15EN: And it came to pass, after the angels departed from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another: Let us go over to Bethlehem, and let us see this word that is come to pass, which the Lord hath shewed to us.
15FR: Lorsque les anges, s’en allant au ciel, les eurent quittés, les bergers se dirent entre eux : « Passons donc jusqu’à Bethléem, et voyons cet événement qui est arrivé, et que le Seigneur nous a fait connaître. »
16EN: And they came with haste; and they found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger.
16FR: Ils s’y rendirent en toute hâte, et trouvèrent Marie, Joseph et le nouveau-né couché dans la crèche.
17EN: And seeing, they understood of the word that had been spoken to them concerning this child.
17FR: Après avoir vu, ils firent connaître ce qui leur avait été dit au sujet de cet enfant.
18EN: And all that heard, wondered; and at those things that were told them by the shepherds.
18FR: Et tous ceux qui les entendirent furent dans l’admiration de ce que leur avaient dit les bergers.
19EN: But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in her heart.
19FR: Quant à Marie, elle conservait avec soin toutes ces choses, les méditant dans son cœur.
20EN: And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God, for all the things they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.
20FR: Et les bergers s’en retournèrent, glorifiant et louant Dieu de tout ce qu’ils avaient entendu et vu, selon ce qui leur avait été dit.
21EN: And after eight days were accomplished, that the child should be circumcised, his name was called JESUS, which was called by the angel, before he was conceived in the womb.
21FR: Les huit jours étant accomplis pour sa circoncision, il fut appelé du nom de Jésus, nom que l’ange avait donné avant qu’il eût été conçu dans le sein maternel.
22EN: And after the days of her purification, according to the law of Moses, were accomplished, they carried him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord:
22FR: Puis, lorsque les jours de leur purification furent accomplis, selon la loi de Moïse, ils le menèrent à Jérusalem pour le présenter au Seigneur,
23EN: As it is written in the law of the Lord: Every male opening the womb shall be called holy to the Lord:
23FR: selon qu’il est écrit dans la loi du Seigneur : Tout mâle premier-né sera regardé comme consacré au Seigneur,
24EN: And to offer a sacrifice, according as it is written in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons:
24FR: et pour offrir en sacrifice, ainsi qu’il est dit dans la loi du Seigneur, une paire de tourterelles ou deux petites colombes.
25EN: And behold there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Ghost was in him.
25FR: Or, il y avait à Jérusalem un homme nommé Siméon ; c’était un homme juste et pieux, qui attendait la consolation d’Israël, et l’Esprit-Saint était sur lui.
26EN: And he had received an answer from the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Christ of the Lord.
26FR: L’Esprit-Saint lui avait révélé qu’il ne mourrait point avant d’avoir vu le Christ du Seigneur.
27EN: And he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when his parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law,
27FR: Il vint donc dans le temple, poussé par l’Esprit. Et comme ses parents amenaient l’enfant Jésus pour observer les coutumes légales à son égard,
28EN: He also took him into his arms, and blessed God, and said:
28FR: lui-même le reçut en ses bras, et il bénit Dieu en disant :
29EN: Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, according to thy word in peace;
29FR: « Maintenant, ô Maître, vous congédiez votre serviteur en paix, selon votre parole ;
30EN: Because my eyes have seen thy salvation,
30FR: car mes yeux ont vu le salut,
31EN: Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples:
31FR: que vous avez préparé à la face de tous les peuples,
32EN: A light to the revelation of the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
32FR: lumière qui doit éclairer les nations et gloire d’Israël, votre peuple. »
33EN: And his father and mother were wondering at those things which were spoken concerning him.
33FR: Et son père et sa mère étaient dans l’étonnement pour les choses que l’on disait de lui.
34EN: And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother: Behold this child is set for the fall, and for the resurrection of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be contradicted;
34FR: Et Siméon les bénit, et il dit à Marie, sa mère : « Voici qu’il est placé pour la chute et le relèvement d’un grand nombre en Israël, et pour être un signe en butte à la contradiction, —
35EN: And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed.
35FR: vous-même, un glaive transpercera votre âme, — afin que soient révélées les pensées d’un grand nombre de cœurs. »
36EN: And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser; she was far advanced in years, and had lived with her husband seven years from her virginity.
36FR: Il y avait aussi une prophétesse, Anne, fille de Phanouel, de la tribu d’Aser ; elle était fort avancée en âge, ayant vécu, depuis sa virginité, sept ans avec son mari,
37EN: And she was a widow until fourscore and four years; who departed not from the temple, by fastings and prayers serving night and day.
37FR: et veuve jusqu’à quatre-vingt-quatre ans. Elle ne quittait point le temple, servant Dieu nuit et jour par des jeûnes et des prières.
38EN: Now she, at the same hour, coming in, confessed to the Lord; and spoke of him to all that looked for the redemption of Israel.
38FR: Survenant à cette heure, elle se mit à louer Dieu et à parler de l’enfant à tous ceux qui attendaient la délivrance de Jérusalem.
39EN: And after they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their city Nazareth.
39FR: Lorsqu’ils eurent accompli tout ce qui était selon la loi du Seigneur, ils retournèrent en Galilée, à Nazareth, leur ville.
40EN: And the child grew, and waxed strong, full of wisdom; and the grace of God was in him.
40FR: L’enfant croissait et se fortifiait, étant rempli de sagesse, et la grâce de Dieu était sur lui.
41EN: And his parents went every year to Jerusalem, at the solemn day of the pasch,
41FR: Or ses parents se rendaient chaque année à Jérusalem, pour la fête de la Pâque.
42EN: And when he was twelve years old, they going up into Jerusalem, according to the custom of the feast,
42FR: Quand il eut douze ans, comme ils étaient montés selon la coutume de la fête,
43EN: And having fulfilled the days, when they returned, the child Jesus remained in Jerusalem; and his parents knew it not.
43FR: et qu’ils s’en retournaient, le temps étant passé, l’enfant Jésus resta à Jérusalem et ses parents ne le surent pas.
44EN: And thinking that he was in the company, they came a day's journey, and sought him among their kinsfolks and acquaintance.
44FR: Pensant qu’il était avec la caravane, ils marchèrent tout un jour, puis ils le cherchèrent parmi leurs parents et leurs connaissances.
45EN: And not finding him, they returned into Jerusalem, seeking him.
45FR: Ne l’ayant point trouvé, ils s’en retournèrent à Jérusalem en le recherchant.
46EN: And it came to pass, that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, hearing them, and asking them questions.
46FR: Or, au bout de trois jours, ils le trouvèrent dans le temple, assis au milieu des docteurs, les écoutant et les interrogeant ;
47EN: And all that heard him were astonished at his wisdom and his answers.
47FR: et tous ceux qui l’entendaient étaient ravis de son intelligence et de ses réponses.
48EN: And seeing him, they wondered. And his mother said to him: Son, why hast thou done so to us? behold thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
48FR: En le voyant, ils furent stupéfaits, et sa mère lui dit : « Mon enfant, pourquoi nous avez-vous fait cela ? Voyez, votre père et moi, nous vous cherchions tout affligés. »
49EN: And he said to them: How is it that you sought me? did you not know, that I must be about my father's business?
49FR: Et il leur répondit : « Pourquoi me cherchiez-vous ? Ne saviez-vous pas qu’il me faut être dans les choses de mon Père ? »
50EN: And they understood not the word that he spoke unto them.
50FR: Mais ils ne comprirent pas la parole qu’il leur dit.
51EN: And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them. And his mother kept all these words in her heart.
51FR: Et il descendit avec eux, et il vint à Nazareth, et il leur était soumis. Et sa mère conservait toutes ces choses en son cœur.
52EN: And Jesus advanced in wisdom, and age, and grace with God and men.
52FR: Et Jésus progressait en sagesse, en taille et en grâce, auprès de Dieu et des hommes.
