1EN: FORASMUCH as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a narration of the things that have been accomplished among us;
1FR: Comme plusieurs ont entrepris de composer une relation des choses accomplies parmi nous,
2EN: According as they have delivered them unto us, who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word:
2FR: conformément à ce que nous ont transmis ceux qui ont été dès le commencement témoins oculaires et ministres de la parole,
3EN: It seemed good to me also, having diligently attained to all things from the beginning, to write to thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
3FR: il m’a paru bon à moi aussi, qui de longue date ai tout suivi avec soin, d’en écrire pour toi le récit suivi, noble Théophile,
4EN: That thou mayest know the verity of those words in which thou hast been instructed.
4FR: afin que tu reconnaisses la certitude des enseignements que tu as reçus.
5EN: There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zachary, of the course of Abia; and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elizabeth.
5FR: Aux jours d’Hérode, roi de Judée, il y avait un prêtre nommé Zacharie, de la classe d’Abia ; et sa femme, qui était des filles d’Aaron, se nommait Elisabeth.
6EN: And they were both just before God, walking in all the commandments and justifications of the Lord without blame.
6FR: Tous deux étaient justes devant Dieu, marchant dans tous les commandements et ordonnances du Seigneur d’une manière irréprochable.
7EN: And they had no son, for that Elizabeth was barren, and they both were well advanced in years.
7FR: Et ils n’avaient point d’enfants, parce qu’Elisabeth était stérile, et ils étaient l’un et l’autre avancés en âge.
8EN: And it came to pass, when he executed the priestly function in the order of his course before God,
8FR: Or, comme il était de service devant Dieu au tour de sa classe,
9EN: According to the custom of the priestly office, it was his lot to offer incense, going into the temple of the Lord.
9FR: il lui échut par le sort, selon la coutume du service divin, d’avoir à entrer dans le sanctuaire du Seigneur pour offrir l’encens.
10EN: And all the multitude of the people was praying without, at the hour of incense.
10FR: Et toute la multitude du peuple était au dehors en prière, à l’heure de l’encens.
11EN: And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing on the right side of the alter of incense.
11FR: Un ange du Seigneur lui apparut, debout à droite de l’autel de l’encens.
12EN: And Zachary seeing him, was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
12FR: Zacharie, en le voyant, fut troublé, et la crainte le saisit.
13EN: But the angel said to him: Fear not, Zachary, for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John:
13FR: Mais l’ange lui dit : « Ne crains point, Zacharie, car ta prière a été exaucée : ta femme Elisabeth t’enfantera un fils que tu appelleras Jean.
14EN: And thou shalt have joy and gladness, and many shall rejoice in his nativity.
14FR: Et ce sera pour toi joie et allégresse, et beaucoup se réjouiront de sa naissance ;
15EN: For he shall be great before the Lord; and shall drink no wine nor strong drink: and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
15FR: car il sera grand devant le Seigneur, il ne boira ni vin ni rien qui enivre, et il sera rempli de l’Esprit-Saint dès le sein de sa mère ;
16EN: And he shall convert many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.
16FR: il ramènera beaucoup des enfants d’Israël au Seigneur leur Dieu ;
17EN: And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias; that he may turn the hearts of the fathers unto the children, and the incredulous to the wisdom of the just, to prepare unto the Lord a perfect people.
17FR: et lui-même marchera devant lui, avec l’esprit et la puissance d’Elie, pour ramener les cœurs des pères vers les enfants et les indociles à la sagesse des justes, afin de préparer au Seigneur un peuple bien disposé. »
18EN: And Zachary said to the angel: Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.
18FR: Zacharie dit à l’ange : « A quoi le reconnaîtrai-je ? Car je suis vieux, et ma femme est avancée en âge. »
19EN: And the angel answering, said to him: I am Gabriel, who stand before God: and am sent to speak to thee, and to bring thee these good tidings.
19FR: L’ange lui répondit : « Je suis Gabriel, qui me tiens devant Dieu ; j’ai été envoyé pour te parler et t’annoncer cette heureuse nouvelle.
20EN: And behold, thou shalt be dumb, and shalt not be able to speak until the day wherein these things shall come to pass, because thou hast not believed my words, which shall be fulfilled in their time.
20FR: Et voici : tu seras muet et ne pourras parler jusqu’au jour où ces choses arriveront, parce que tu n’as pas cru à mes paroles, qui s’accompliront en leur temps. »
21EN: And the people were waiting for Zachary; and they wondered that he tarried so long in the temple.
21FR: Cependant le peuple attendait Zacharie et on s’étonnait qu’il s’attardât dans le sanctuaire.
22EN: And when he came out, he could not speak to them: and they understood that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he made signs to them, and remained dumb.
22FR: Or, étant sorti, il ne pouvait leur parler, et ils comprirent qu’il avait eu une vision dans le sanctuaire ; et lui leur faisait des signes, et il resta muet.
23EN: And it came to pass, after the days of his office were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
23FR: Quand les jours de son service furent accomplis, il s’en alla en sa maison.
24EN: And after those days, Elizabeth his wife conceived, and hid herself five months, saying:
24FR: Après ces jours, Elisabeth, sa femme, conçut, et elle se tint cachée pendant cinq mois, disant :
25EN: Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he hath had regard to take away my reproach among men.
25FR: « Ainsi a fait pour moi le Seigneur, au jour où il lui a plu d’ôter mon opprobre parmi les hommes. »
26EN: And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth,
26FR: Au sixième mois, l’ange Gabriel fut envoyé par Dieu dans une ville de Galilée appelée Nazareth,
27EN: To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
27FR: vers une vierge qui était fiancée à un homme de la maison de David, nommé Joseph ; et le nom de la vierge était Marie.
28EN: And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
28FR: Etant entré où elle était, il lui dit : « Salut, pleine de grâce ! Le Seigneur est avec vous ; [vous êtes bénie entre les femmes]. »
29EN: Who having heard, was troubled at his saying, and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be.
29FR: Mais à cette parole elle fut fort troublée, et elle se demandait ce que pouvait être cette salutation.
30EN: And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God.
30FR: L’ange lui dit : « Ne craignez point, Marie, car vous avez trouvé grâce devant Dieu.
31EN: Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus.
31FR: Voici que vous concevrez, et vous enfanterez un fils, et vous lui donnerez le nom de Jésus.
32EN: He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the most High; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father; and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever.
32FR: Il sera grand et sera appelé fils du Très-Haut ; le Seigneur Dieu lui donnera le trône de David son père ;
33EN: And of his kingdom there shall be no end.
33FR: il régnera éternellement sur la maison de Jacob, et son règne n’aura point de fin. »
34EN: And Mary said to the angel: How shall this be done, because I know not man?
34FR: Marie dit à l’ange : « Comment cela sera-t-il, puisque je ne connais point l’homme ? »
35EN: And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
35FR: L’ange lui répondit : « L’Esprit-Saint viendra sur vous, et la vertu du Très-Haut vous couvrira de son ombre. C’est pourquoi l’être saint qui naîtra sera appelé Fils de Dieu.
36EN: And behold thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren:
36FR: Et voici qu’Elisabeth, votre parente, a conçu, elle aussi, un fils dans sa vieillesse, et ce mois-ci est le sixième pour elle que l’on appelait stérile,
37EN: Because no word shall be impossible with God.
37FR: car rien ne sera impossible pour Dieu. »
38EN: And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
38FR: Marie dit alors : « Voici la servante du Seigneur : qu’il me soit fait selon votre parole ! » Et l’ange la quitta.
39EN: And Mary rising up in those days, went into the hill country with haste into a city of Juda.
39FR: En ces jours-là Marie partit et s’en alla en hâte vers la montagne, en une ville de Juda.
40EN: And she entered into the house of Zachary, and saluted Elizabeth.
40FR: Et elle entra dans la maison de Zacharie, et salua Elisabeth.
41EN: And it came to pass, that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
41FR: Or, quand Elisabeth entendit la salutation de Marie, l’enfant tressaillit dans son sein, et elle fut remplie du Saint-Esprit.
42EN: And she cried out with a loud voice, and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
42FR: Et elle s’écria à haute voix, disant : « Vous êtes bénie entre les femmes, et le fruit de vos entrailles est béni.
43EN: And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
43FR: Et d’où m’est-il donné que la mère de mon Seigneur vienne à moi ?
44EN: For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
44FR: Car votre voix, lorsque vous m’avez saluée, n’a pas plus tôt frappé mes oreilles, que l’enfant a tressailli de joie dans mon sein.
45EN: And blessed art thou that hast believed, because those things shall be accomplished that were spoken to thee by the Lord.
45FR: Heureuse celle qui a cru ! Car elles seront accomplies les choses qui lui ont été dites de la part du Seigneur ! »
46EN: And Mary said: My soul doth magnify the Lord.
46FR: Et Marie dit : « Mon âme glorifie le Seigneur,
47EN: And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
47FR: et mon esprit tressaille de joie en Dieu, mon Sauveur,
48EN: Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
48FR: parce qu’il a jeté les yeux sur la bassesse de sa servante. Voici, en effet, que désormais toutes les générations me diront bienheureuse,
49EN: Because he that is mighty, hath done great things to me; and holy is his name.
49FR: parce que le Puissant a fait pour moi de grandes choses. Et son nom est saint,
50EN: And his mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear him.
50FR: et sa miséricorde d’âge en âge, est pour ceux qui le craignent.
51EN: He hath shewed might in his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.
51FR: Il a fait œuvre de force avec son bras ; il a dissipé ceux qui s’enorgueillissaient dans les pensées de leur cœur ;
52EN: He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble.
52FR: il a renversé de leur trône les potentats, et il a élevé les humbles ;
53EN: He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
53FR: il a rassasié de biens les affamés, et il a renvoyé les riches les mains vides.
54EN: He hath received Israel his servant, being mindful of his mercy:
54FR: Il a pris soin d’Israël son serviteur, se ressouvenant de sa miséricorde,
55EN: As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed for ever.
55FR: — ainsi qu’il l’avait promis à nos pères, — en faveur d’Abraham et de sa race, pour toujours. »
56EN: And Mary abode with her about three months; and she returned to her own house.
56FR: Et Marie demeura avec elle environ trois mois, et elle s’en retourna chez elle.
57EN: Now Elizabeth's full time of being delivered was come, and she brought forth a son.
57FR: Cependant le temps s’accomplit où Elisabeth devait enfanter, et elle mit au monde un fils.
58EN: And her neighbours and kinsfolks heard that the Lord had shewed his great mercy towards her, and they congratulated with her.
58FR: Ses voisins et ses parents, ayant appris que le Seigneur avait manifesté sa miséricorde envers elle, se réjouissaient avec elle.
59EN: And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they called him by his father's name Zachary.
59FR: Or, le huitième jour, ils vinrent pour circoncire l’enfant, et ils le nommaient Zacharie d’après le nom de son père.
60EN: And his mother answering, said: Not so; but he shall be called John.
60FR: Alors sa mère, prenant la parole : « Non, dit-elle, mais il s’appellera Jean. »
61EN: And they said to her: There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
61FR: Ils lui dirent : « Il n’y a personne de votre parenté qui soit appelé de ce nom. »
62EN: And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
62FR: Et ils demandaient par signes à son père comment il voulait qu’on le nommât.
63EN: And demanding a writing table, he wrote, saying: John is his name. And they all wondered.
63FR: S’étant fait donner une tablette, il écrivit : « Jean est son nom ; » et tous furent dans l’étonnement.
64EN: And immediately his mouth was opened, and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God.
64FR: A l’instant sa bouche s’ouvrit et sa langue (se délia) ; et il parlait, bénissant Dieu.
65EN: And fear came upon all their neighbours; and all these things were noised abroad over all the hill country of Judea.
65FR: La crainte s’empara de tous les habitants d’alentour, et partout dans la montagne de Judée on racontait toutes ces choses.
66EN: And all they that had heard them laid them up in their heart, saying: What an one, think ye, shall this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him.
66FR: Tous ceux qui en entendirent parler les recueillirent dans leur cœur, et ils disaient : « Que sera donc cet enfant ? » Et en effet la main du Seigneur était avec lui.
67EN: And Zachary his father was filled with the Holy Ghost; and he prophesied, saying:
67FR: Et Zacharie, son père, fut rempli de l’Esprit-Saint, et il prophétisa, en disant :
68EN: Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people:
68FR: « Béni soit le Seigneur, le Dieu d’Israël, parce qu’il a visité et racheté son peuple.
69EN: And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, in the house of David his servant:
69FR: et qu’il a suscité pour nous une corne de salut, dans la maison de David, son serviteur,
70EN: As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets, who are from the beginning:
70FR: — ainsi qu’il l’a promis par la bouche de ses saints prophètes, dès les temps anciens, —
71EN: Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us:
71FR: pour nous sauver de nos ennemis et de la main de tous ceux qui nous haïssent,
72EN: To perform mercy to our fathers, and to remember his holy testament,
72FR: afin d’exercer sa miséricorde envers nos pères et de se souvenir de son pacte saint,
73EN: The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, that he would grant to us,
73FR: du serment qu’il fit à Abraham, notre père, de nous accorder que,
74EN: That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we may serve him without fear,
74FR: sans crainte, affranchis de la main de nos ennemis, nous le servions,
75EN: In holiness and justice before him, all our days.
75FR: avec sainteté et justice devant lui, tous les jours de notre (vie).
76EN: And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways:
76FR: Quant à toi, petit enfant, tu seras appelé prophète du Très-Haut, car tu marcheras devant la face du Seigneur pour lui préparer les voies,
77EN: To give knowledge of salvation to his people, unto the remission of their sins:
77FR: afin d’apprendre à son peuple à reconnaître le salut dans la rémission de leurs péchés,
78EN: Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, in which the Orient from on high hath visited us:
78FR: par l’effet de la tendre miséricorde de notre Dieu, par laquelle nous visitera une lumière d’en haut
79EN: To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: to direct our feet into the way of peace.
79FR: pour éclairer ceux qui sont assis dans les ténèbres et l’ombre de la mort, pour diriger nos pas dans la voie de la paix. »
80EN: And the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit; and was in the deserts until the day of his manifestation to Israel.
80FR: Or l’enfant croissait et se fortifiait en esprit, et il demeura dans le désert jusqu’au jour de sa manifestation devant Israël.
