1EN: IN the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
1FR: Au commencement était le Verbe, et le Verbe était en Dieu, et le Verbe était Dieu.
2EN: The same was in the beginning with God.
2FR: Il était au commencement en Dieu.
3EN: All things were made by him: and without him was made nothing that was made.
3FR: Tout par lui a été fait, et sans lui n’a été fait rien de ce qui existe.
4EN: In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
4FR: En lui était la vie, et la vie était la lumière des hommes,
5EN: And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
5FR: Et la lumière luit dans les ténèbres, et les ténèbres ne l’ont point reçue.
6EN: There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
6FR: Il y eut un homme, envoyé de Dieu ; son nom était Jean.
7EN: This man came for a witness, to give testimony of the light, that all men might believe through him.
7FR: Celui-ci vint en témoignage, pour rendre témoignage à la lumière, afin que tous crussent par lui :
8EN: He was not the light, but was to give testimony of the light.
8FR: non que celui-ci fût la lumière, mais il avait à rendre témoignage à la lumière.
9EN: That was the true light, which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world.
9FR: La lumière, la vraie, celle qui éclaire tout homme, venait dans le monde.
10EN: He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
10FR: Il (le Verbe) était dans le monde, et le monde par lui a été fait, et le monde ne l’a pas connu.
11EN: He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
11FR: Il vint chez lui, et les siens ne l’ont pas reçu.
12EN: But as many as received him, he gave them power to be made the sons of God, to them that believe in his name.
12FR: Mais quant à tous ceux qui l’ont reçu, Il leur a donné le pouvoir de devenir enfants de Dieu, à ceux qui croient en son nom,
13EN: Who are born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
13FR: Qui non du sang, ni de la volonté de la chair, ni de la volonté de l’homme, mais de Dieu sont nés.
14EN: And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we saw his glory, the glory as it were of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
14FR: Et le Verbe s’est fait chair, et il a habité parmi nous, (et nous avons vu sa gloire, gloire comme celle qu’un fils unique tient de son Père) tout plein de grâce et de vérité.
15EN: John beareth witness of him, and crieth out, saying: This was he of whom I spoke: He that shall come after me, is preferred before me: because he was before me.
15FR: Jean lui rend témoignage, et s’écrie en ces termes : « Voici celui dont je disais : Celui qui vient après moi, est passé devant moi, parce qu’il était avant moi. »
16EN: And of his fulness we all have received, and grace for grace.
16FR: et c’est de sa plénitude, que nous avons tous reçu, et grâce sur grâce ;
17EN: For the law was given by Moses; grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
17FR: parce que la loi a été donnée par Moïse, la grâce et la vérité sont venues par Jésus-Christ.
18EN: No man hath seen God at any time: the only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
18FR: Dieu, personne ne le vit jamais : le Fils unique, qui est dans le sein du Père c’est lui qui l’a fait connaître.
19EN: And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent from Jerusalem priests and Levites to him, to ask him: Who art thou?
19FR: Et voici le témoignage que rendit Jean, lorsque les Juifs envoyèrent de Jérusalem des prêtres et des lévites pour lui demander : « Qui êtes-vous ? »
20EN: And he confessed, and did not deny: and he confessed: I am not the Christ.
20FR: Il déclara, et ne le nia point ; il déclara : « Je ne suis point le Christ. »
21EN: And they asked him: What then? Art thou Elias? And he said: I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered: No.
21FR: Et ils lui demandèrent : « Quoi donc ! Êtes-vous Élie ? » Il dit « Je ne le suis point » « Etes-vous le prophète ? » Il répondit « Non »
22EN: They said therefore unto him: Who art thou, that we may give an answer to them that sent us? What sayest thou of thyself?
22FR: « Qui êtes-vous donc », lui dirent-ils, afin que nous donnions une réponse à ceux qui nous ont envoyés. « Que dites-vous de vous-même ? »
23EN: He said: I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaias.
23FR: Il répondit : « Je suis la voix de celui qui crie dans le désert : Aplanissez le chemin du Seigneur, comme l’a dit le prophète Isaïe. »
24EN: And they that were sent, were of the Pharisees.
24FR: Or ceux qu’on lui avait envoyés étaient des Pharisiens.
25EN: And they asked him, and said to him: Why then dost thou baptize, if thou be not Christ, nor Elias, nor the prophet?
25FR: Et ils l’interrogèrent, et lui dirent : « Pourquoi donc baptisez-vous, si vous n’êtes ni le Christ, ni Élie, ni le Prophète ? »
26EN: John answered them, saying: I baptize with water; but there hath stood one in the midst of you, whom you know not.
26FR: Jean leur répondit : « Moi je baptise dans l’eau ; mais au milieu de vous il y a quelqu’un que vous ne connaissez pas,
27EN: The same is he that shall come after me, who is preferred before me: the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to loose.
27FR: C’est celui qui vient après moi ; je ne suis pas digne de délier la courroie de sa chaussure. »
28EN: These things were done in Bethania, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
28FR: Cela se passait à Béthanie, au delà du Jourdain, où Jean baptisait.
29EN: The next day, John saw Jesus coming to him, and he saith: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who taketh away the sin of the world.
29FR: Le lendemain, Jean vit Jésus qui venait vers lui, et il dit : « Voici l’agneau de Dieu, voici celui qui ôte le péché du monde.
30EN: This is he, of whom I said: After me there cometh a man, who is preferred before me: because he was before me.
30FR: C’est de lui que j’ai dit : un homme vient après moi, qui est passé devant moi, parce qu’il était avant moi. »
31EN: And I knew him not, but that he may be made manifest in Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
31FR: Et moi, je ne le connaissais pas, mais c’est afin qu’il fût manifesté à Israël que je suis venu baptiser dans l’eau. »
32EN: And John gave testimony, saying: I saw the Spirit coming down, as a dove from heaven, and he remained upon him.
32FR: Et Jean rendit témoignage en disant : « J’ai vu l’Esprit descendre du ciel comme une colombe, et il s’est reposé sur lui.
33EN: And I knew him not; but he who sent me to baptize with water, said to me: He upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining upon him, he it is that baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
33FR: Et moi je ne le connaissais pas ; mais celui qui m’a envoyé baptiser dans l’eau m’a dit : Celui sur qui tu verras l’Esprit descendre et se reposer, c’est lui qui baptise dans l’Esprit-Saint.
34EN: And I saw, and I gave testimony, that this is the Son of God.
34FR: Et moi j’ai vu et j’ai rendu témoignage que celui-là est le Fils de Dieu. »
35EN: The next day again John stood, and two of his disciples.
35FR: Le lendemain , Jean se trouvait encore là, avec deux de ses disciples.
36EN: And beholding Jesus walking, he saith: Behold the Lamb of God.
36FR: Et ayant regardé Jésus qui passait, il dit : « Voici l’Agneau de Dieu. »
37EN: And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
37FR: Les deux disciples l’entendirent parler, et ils suivirent Jésus.
38EN: And Jesus turning, and seeing them following him, saith to them: What seek you? Who said to him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?
38FR: Jésus s’étant retourné, et voyant qu’ils le suivaient, leur dit : « Que cherchez-vous ? » Ils lui répondirent : « Rabbi (ce qui signifie Maître), où demeurez-vous ?
39EN: He saith to them: Come and see. They came, and saw where he abode, and they stayed with him that day: now it was about the tenth hour.
39FR: Il leur dit : « Venez et vous verrez. » Ils allèrent et virent où il demeurait, et ils restèrent auprès de lui ce jour-là. Or c’était environ la dixième heure.
40EN: And Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who had heard of John, and followed him.
40FR: Or, André, le frère de Simon-Pierre, était l’un des deux qui avaient entendu la parole de Jean, et qui avaient suivi Jésus.
41EN: He findeth first his brother Simon, and saith to him: We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
41FR: Il rencontra d’abord son frère Simon, et lui dit : « Nous avons trouvé le Messie (ce qui se traduit Christ). »
42EN: And he brought him to Jesus. And Jesus looking upon him, said: Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is interpreted Peter.
42FR: Et il l’amena à Jésus. Jésus, l’ayant regardé dit : « Toi, tu es Simon, fils de Jean ; tu seras appelé Céphas (ce qui se traduit Pierre). »
43EN: On the following day, he would go forth into Galilee, and he findeth Philip. And Jesus saith to him: Follow me.
43FR: Le jour suivant, Jésus résolut d’aller en Galilée. Et il rencontra Philippe.
44EN: Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
44FR: Et Jésus lui dit : « Suis-moi. » Philippe était de Bethsaïde, la ville d’André et de Pierre.
45EN: Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith to him: We have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets did write, Jesus the son of Joseph of Nazareth.
45FR: Philippe rencontra Nathanaël et lui dit : « Nous avons trouvé celui dont Moïse a écrit dans la Loi, ainsi que les Prophètes : c’est Jésus, fils de Joseph de Nazareth. »
46EN: And Nathanael said to him: Can any thing of good come from Nazareth? Philip saith to him: Come and see.
46FR: Nathanaël lui répondit : « Peut-il sortir de Nazareth quelque chose de bon ? » Philippe lui dit : « Viens et vois. »
47EN: Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him: and he saith of him: Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile.
47FR: Jésus vit venir vers lui Nathanaël, et dit en parlant de lui : « Voici vraiment un Israélite, en qui il n’y a nul artifice. »
48EN: Nathanael saith to him: Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered, and said to him: Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.
48FR: Nathanaël lui dit : « D’où me connaissez-vous ? » Jésus repartit et lui dit : « Avant que Philippe t’appelât, lorsque tu étais sous le figuier, je t’ai vu. »
49EN: Nathanael answered him, and said: Rabbi, thou art the Son of God, thou art the King of Israel.
49FR: Nathanaël lui répondit : « Rabbi, vous êtes le Fils de Dieu, vous êtes le Roi d’Israël. »
50EN: Jesus answered, and said to him: Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, thou believest: greater things than these shalt thou see.
50FR: Jésus lui repartit : « Parce que je t’ai dit : Je t’ai vu sous le figuier, tu crois ! Tu verras de plus grandes choses que celle-là. »
51EN: And he saith to him: Amen, amen I say to you, you shall see the heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
51FR: Et il ajouta : « En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, vous verrez désormais le ciel ouvert, et les anges de Dieu montant et descendant sur le Fils de l’homme. »
