1EN: AND when we had escaped, then we knew that the island was called Melita. But the barbarians shewed us no small courtesy.
1FR: Une fois sauvés, nous apprîmes alors que l’île s’appelait Malte.
2EN: For kindling a fire, they refreshed us all, because of the present rain, and of the cold.
2FR: Les barbares nous témoignèrent une humanité peu commune ; car, ayant allumé un grand feu, ils nous recueillirent tous à cause de la pluie qu’il faisait et du froid.
3EN: And when Paul had gathered together a bundle of sticks, and had laid them on the fire, a viper coming out of the heat, fastened on his hand.
3FR: Or, Paul ayant ramassé des broussailles en quantité et les ayant mises sur le brasier, une vipère, que la chaleur en fit sortir, s’attacha à sa main.
4EN: And when the barbarians saw the beast hanging on his hand, they said one to another: Undoubtedly this man is a murderer, who though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance doth not suffer him to live.
4FR: En voyant la bête qui pendait à sa main, les barbares se dirent les un aux autres : « Sans aucun doute, cet homme est un meurtrier ; car, après qu’il a été sauvé de la mer, la Justice ne l’a pas laissé vivre. »
5EN: And he indeed shaking off the beast into the fire, suffered no harm.
5FR: Lui, cependant, secoua la bête dans le feu et n’en ressentit aucun mal.
6EN: But they supposed that he would begin to swell up, and that he would suddenly fall down and die. But expecting long, and seeing that there came no harm to him, changing their minds, they said, that he was a god.
6FR: Eux s’attendaient à le voir enfler ou tomber mort subitement ; mais, après avoir longtemps attendu, voyant qu’il ne lui arrivait aucun mal, ils changèrent d’avis, et ils disaient : « C’est un dieu. »
7EN: Now in these places were possessions of the chief man of the island, named Publius, who receiving us, for three days entertained us courteously.
7FR: Or il y avait, dans le voisinage, une campagne qui appartenait au Premier de l’île, nommé Publius ; celui-ci nous reçut et nous donna pendant trois jours l’hospitalité la plus amicale.
8EN: And it happened that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever, and of a bloody flux. To whom Paul entered in; and when he had prayed, and laid his hands on him, he healed him.
8FR: Il se trouva que le père de Publius était au lit, malade de la fièvre et de la dysenterie. Paul alla le visiter, et, après avoir prié, il lui imposa les mains et le guérit.
9EN: Which being done, all that had diseases in the island, came and were healed:
9FR: Sur quoi, les autres malades de l’île venaient aussi, et ils étaient guéris.
10EN: Who also honoured us with many honours, and when we were to set sail, they laded us with such things as were necessary.
10FR: On nous rendit de grands honneurs et, à notre départ, on nous pourvut de ce dont nous avions besoin.
11EN: And after three months, we sailed in a ship of Alexandria, that had wintered in the island, whose sign was the Castors.
11FR: Après (un séjour de) trois mois, nous nous embarquâmes sur un vaisseau d’Alexandrie, à l’enseigne des Dioscures, qui avait passé l’hiver dans l’île.
12EN: And when we were come to Syracusa, we tarried there three days.
12FR: Ayant abordé à Syracuse, nous y restâmes trois jours.
13EN: From thence, compassing by the shore, we came to Rhegium: and after one day, the south wind blowing, we came the second day to Puteoli;
13FR: De là, en côtoyant, nous atteignîmes Reggio. Un jour après, le vent se mit à souffler du sud, et nous arrivâmes le second jour à Pouzzoles.
14EN: Where, finding brethren, we were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went to Rome.
14FR: Nous y trouvâmes des frères qui nous prièrent de passer sept jours avec eux ; et c’est ainsi que nous vînmes à Rome.
15EN: And from thence, when the brethren had heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii Forum, and the Three Taverns: whom when Paul saw, he gave thanks to God, and took courage.
15FR: De là, les frères, informés sur notre compte, vinrent au-devant de nous jusqu’au Forum d’Appius et aux Trois-Tavernes. Paul, en les voyant rendit grâces à Dieu et prit confiance.
16EN: And when we were come to Rome, Paul was suffered to dwell by himself, with a soldier that kept him.
16FR: Quand nous fûmes entrés à Rome, on permit à Paul de demeurer en son particulier avec un soldat qui le gardait.
17EN: And after the third day, he called together the chief of the Jews. And when they were assembled, he said to them: Men, brethren, I, having done nothing against the people, or the custom of our fathers, was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans;
17FR: Or il advint que (Paul), trois jours après, convoqua les principaux d’entre les Juifs ; et quand ils furent réunis, il leur dit : « Frères, sans avoir rien fait ni contre la nation, ni contre les coutumes de nos pères, prisonnier depuis Jérusalem, j’ai été livré aux mains des Romains.
18EN: Who, when they had examined me, would have released me, for that there was no cause of death in me;
18FR: Après m’avoir interrogé, ils voulaient me relâcher, parce qu’il n’y avait rien en moi qui méritât la mort.
19EN: But the Jews contradicting it, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar; not that I had any thing to accuse my nation of.
19FR: Mais les Juifs s’y opposèrent, et j’ai été contraint d’en appeler à César, sans que j’aie aucun dessein d’accuser ma nation.
20EN: For this cause therefore I desired to see you, and to speak to you. Because that for the hope of Israel, I am bound with this chain.
20FR: Voilà la raison pour laquelle j’ai demandé à vous voir et à vous parler ; car c’est à cause de l’espérance d’Israël que je porte cette chaîne. »
21EN: But they said to him: We neither received letters concerning thee from Judea, neither did any of the brethren that came hither, relate or speak any evil of thee.
21FR: Ils lui répondirent : « Pour nous, nous n’avons reçu de la Judée aucune lettre à ton sujet, et il n’est venu aucun frère qui nous ait rapporté ou dit quelque mal de toi.
22EN: But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest; for as concerning this sect, we know that it is every where contradicted.
22FR: Mais nous estimons juste d’entendre de toi ce que tu penses ; car, pour ce qui est de cette secte, nous savons qu’elle rencontre partout de l’opposition. »
23EN: And when they had appointed him a day, there came very many to him unto his lodgings; to whom he expounded, testifying the kingdom of God, and persuading them concerning Jesus, out of the law of Moses and the prophets, from morning until evening.
23FR: Ayant pris jour avec lui, ils vinrent en plus grand nombre le trouver où il logeait. Il leur fit un exposé du royaume de Dieu, donnant son témoignage et cherchant à les convaincre par la loi de Moïse et les Prophètes de ce qui concerne Jésus, (cela) depuis le matin jusqu’au soir.
24EN: And some believed the things that were said; but some believed not.
24FR: Les uns étaient convaincus par ce qu’il disait, mais les autres ne croyaient point.
25EN: And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, Paul speaking this one word: Well did the Holy Ghost speak to our fathers by Isaias the prophet,
25FR: Comme ils se retiraient en désaccord entre eux, Paul dit ce seul mot : « C’est bien vrai ce que l’Esprit-Saint a dit à vos pères par le prophète Isaïe :
26EN: Saying: Go to this people, and say to them: With the ear you shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing you shall see, and shall not perceive.
26FR: Va vers ce peuple, et dis : Vous entendrez de vos oreilles, et vous ne comprendrez point ; vous regarderez de vos yeux, et vous ne verrez point.
27EN: For the heart of this people is grown gross, and with their ears have they heard heavily, and their eyes they have shut; lest perhaps they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
27FR: Car le cœur de ce peuple est devenu insensible ; ils ont endurci leurs oreilles et ils ont fermé leurs yeux, de peur de voir de leurs yeux, d’entendre de leurs oreilles, de comprendre avec leur cœur et de se convertir pour que je les guérisse.
28EN: Be it known therefore to you, that this salvation of God is sent to the Gentiles, and they will hear it.
28FR: Sachez donc que ce salut de Dieu a été envoyé aux Gentils ; eux, ils entendront. »
29EN: And when he had said these things, the Jews went out from him, having much reasoning among themselves.
29FR: (...)
30EN: And he remained two whole years in his own hired lodging; and he received all that came in to him,
30FR: Or Paul demeura deux ans entiers dans une maison qu’il avait louée. Il recevait tous ceux qui venaient chez lui,
31EN: Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching the things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, without prohibition.
31FR: prêchant le royaume de Dieu et enseignant ce qui regarde le Seigneur Jésus-Christ, en toute assurance, sans empêchement.
