1EN: AND it came to pass, while Apollo was at Corinth, that Paul having passed through the upper coasts, came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples.
1FR: Or il arriva, pendant qu’Apollos était à Corinthe, que Paul, après avoir parcouru les hauts plateaux (de l’Asie), vint à Ephèse, (où) il trouva certains disciples,
2EN: And he said to them: Have you received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? But they said to him: We have not so much as heard whether there be a Holy Ghost.
2FR: auxquels il dit : « Avez-vous reçu l’Esprit-Saint quand vous avez cru ? » Eux lui (répondirent) : « Mais nous n’avons pas même entendu dire qu’il y ait un Esprit-Saint. »
3EN: And he said: In what then were you baptized? Who said: In John's baptism.
3FR: Il dit : « Quel baptême avez-vous donc reçu ? » Ils dirent : « Le baptême de Jean. »
4EN: Then Paul said: John baptized the people with the baptism of penance, saying: That they should believe in him who was to come after him, that is to say, in Jesus.
4FR: Paul dit alors : « Jean a baptisé d’un baptême de repentance, en disant au peuple de croire en celui qui venait après lui, c’est-à-dire en Jésus. »
5EN: Having heard these things, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
5FR: Ayant entendu (ces paroles), ils furent baptisés au nom du Seigneur Jésus.
6EN: And when Paul had imposed his hands on them, the Holy Ghost came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
6FR: Lorsque Paul leur eut imposé les mains, l’Esprit-Saint vint sur eux ; et ils parlaient en langues et ils prophétisaient.
7EN: And all the men were about twelve.
7FR: Ces hommes étaient environ douze en tout.
8EN: And entering into the synagogue, he spoke boldly for the space of three months, disputing and exhorting concerning the kingdom of God.
8FR: Ensuite (Paul) entra dans la synagogue, et, pendant trois mois, il y parlait avec assurance, discourant d’une manière persuasive sur le royaume de Dieu.
9EN: But when some were hardened, and believed not, speaking evil of the way of the Lord, before the multitude, departing from them, he separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.
9FR: Mais, comme quelques-uns restaient endurcis et incrédules, décriant devant la masse la voie du Seigneur, il se sépara d’eux et prit à part les disciples, discourant chaque jour dans l’école d’un [certain] Tyrannus.
10EN: And this continued for the space of two years, so that all they who dwelt in Asia, heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Gentiles.
10FR: Ce qui dura deux ans, en sorte que tous ceux qui habitaient l’Asie, tant Juifs que Grecs, entendirent la parole du Seigneur.
11EN: And God wrought by the hand of Paul more than common miracles.
11FR: Et Dieu faisait des miracles extraordinaires par les mains de Paul,
12EN: So that even there were brought from his body to the sick, handkerchiefs and aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the wicked spirits went out of them.
12FR: si bien que même (on appliquait) sur les malades des mouchoirs ou des tabliers qui avaient été pris sur son corps, et que les maladies les quittaient, et que les esprits mauvais s’en allaient.
13EN: Now some also of the Jewish exorcists who went about, attempted to invoke over them that had evil spirits, the name of the Lord Jesus, saying: I conjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preacheth.
13FR: Or quelques-uns aussi des exorcistes juifs ambulants essayèrent d’invoquer le nom du Seigneur Jésus sur ceux qui avaient des esprits mauvais, en disant : « Je vous adjure par le Jésus que Paul prêche. »
14EN: And there were certain men, seven sons of Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest, that did this.
14FR: C’étaient sept fils d’un certain Scévas, grand prêtre juif, qui faisaient cela.
15EN: But the wicked spirit, answering, said to them: Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?
15FR: Mais l’esprit mauvais, répliquant, leur dit : « Je connais Jésus et je sais (qui est) Paul ; mais vous, qui êtes-vous ? »
16EN: And the man in whom the wicked spirit was, leaping upon them, and mastering them both, prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
16FR: Et l’homme, en qui était l’esprit mauvais, se jetant sur eux, se rendit maître de tous et fut tellement plus fort qu’eux, qu’ils s’enfuirent de cette maison nus et blessés.
17EN: And this became known to all the Jews and the Gentiles that dwelt at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
17FR: Et cela fut connu de tous les Juifs et de tous les Grecs qui demeuraient à Ephèse, et la crainte tomba sur eux tous, et le nom du Seigneur Jésus fut magnifié.
18EN: And many of them that believed, came confessing and declaring their deeds.
18FR: Beaucoup de ceux qui avaient cru venaient confesser et déclarer leurs pratiques.
19EN: And many of them who had followed curious arts, brought together their books, and burnt them before all; and counting the price of them, they found the money to be fifty thousand pieces of silver.
19FR: Et bon nombre de ceux qui avaient pratiqué la magie, après avoir entassé les livres, les brûlaient devant tous. On en estima la valeur et on trouva (qu’elle était de) cinquante mille pièces d’argent.
20EN: So mightily grew the word of God, and was confirmed.
20FR: Ainsi la parole du Seigneur se répandait et se montrait puissante.
21EN: And when these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying: After I have been there, I must see Rome also.
21FR: Après que ces choses furent accomplies, Paul résolut en lui-même d’aller à Jérusalem, en passant par la Macédoine et l’Achaïe, disant : « Après que j’aurai été là, il faut que je voie aussi Rome. »
22EN: And sending into Macedonia two of them that ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself remained for a time in Asia.
22FR: Il envoya en Macédoine deux de ses auxiliaires, Timothée et Eraste, et lui-même resta quelque temps en Asie.
23EN: Now at that time there arose no small disturbance about the way of the Lord.
23FR: Or il se fit en ce temps-là un grand tumulte à propos de la voie (du Seigneur).
24EN: For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver temples for Diana, brought no small gain to the craftsmen;
24FR: Car un nommé Démétrius, orfèvre, qui fabriquait en argent des temples d’Artémis et procurait aux artisans un gain considérable,
25EN: Whom he calling together, with the workmen of like occupation, said: Sirs, you know that our gain is by this trade;
25FR: les ayant rassemblés, ainsi que les ouvriers de la partie, dit : « Hommes, vous savez que notre bien-être dépend de cette industrie ;
26EN: And you see and hear, that this Paul by persuasion hath drawn away a great multitude, not only of Ephesus, but almost of all Asia, saying: They are not gods which are made by hands.
26FR: et vous voyez et entendez dire que, non seulement à Ephèse, mais dans presque toute l’Asie, ce Paul a persuadé et détourné une foule de gens, en disant que ce ne sont pas des dieux ceux qui sont faits avec les mains.
27EN: So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought, but also the temple of great Diana shall be reputed for nothing; yea, and her majesty shall begin to be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.
27FR: Il y a danger non seulement pour nous que notre métier tombe dans le discrédit, mais encore que le temple de la grande déesse Artémis soit tenu pour rien, et même que la majesté de celle que révèrent toute l’Asie et le monde entier vienne à être réduite à néant. »
28EN: Having heard these things, they were full of anger, and cried out, saying: Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
28FR: Ayant entendu (cela) et rendus pleins de colère, ils criaient, disant : « Grande est l’Artémis des Ephésiens ! »
29EN: And the whole city was filled with confusion; and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.
29FR: Et la ville fut remplie de confusion, et ils se précipitèrent tous ensemble vers le théâtre, entraînant Gaïus et Aristarque, Macédoniens, compagnons de voyage de Paul.
30EN: And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.
30FR: Comme Paul voulait pénétrer dans l’assemblée, les disciples ne le lui permirent pas.
31EN: And some also of the rulers of Asia, who were his friends, sent unto him, desiring that he would not venture himself into the theatre.
31FR: Quelques-uns aussi des Asiarques, qui étaient ses amis, envoyèrent vers lui pour le prier de ne pas se risquer au théâtre.
32EN: Now some cried one thing, some another. For the assembly was confused, and the greater part knew not for what cause they were come together.
32FR: Les uns donc criaient d’une manière, les autres d’une autre, car la confusion régnait dans l’assemblée, et la plupart ne savaient pourquoi ils étaient réunis.
33EN: And they drew forth Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews thrusting him forward. And Alexander beckoning with his hand for silence, would have given the people satisfaction.
33FR: Cependant, de la foule on persuada Alexandre, que les Juifs poussaient en avant ; et Alexandre, après avoir fait signe de la main, allait donner des explications à l’assemblée.
34EN: But as soon as they perceived him to be a Jew, all with one voice, for the space of about two hours, cried out: Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
34FR: Mais, lorsqu’ils eurent reconnu qu’il était juif, ils crièrent tous d’une seule voix durant environ deux heures : « Grande est l’Artémis des Ephésiens ! »
35EN: And when the town clerk had appeased the multitudes, he said: Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great Diana, and of Jupiter's offspring.
35FR: Le grammate, ayant (enfin) apaisé la foule, dit : « Ephésiens, quel est bien l’homme qui ne sait pas que la ville d’Ephèse est gardienne du temple de la grande Artémis et de la (statue) tombée du ciel ?
36EN: For as much therefore as these things cannot be contradicted, you ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.
36FR: Cela donc étant incontestable, vous devez vous apaiser et ne rien faire inconsidérément,
37EN: For you have brought hither these men, who are neither guilty of sacrilege, nor of blasphemy against your goddess.
37FR: car ces hommes que vous avez amenés ne sont ni des sacrilèges, ni des blasphémateurs de votre déesse.
38EN: But if Demetrius and the craftsmen that are with him, have a matter against any man, the courts of justice are open, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another.
38FR: Que si Démétrius et les artisans à son service ont à se plaindre de quelqu’un, il se tient des audiences et il y a des proconsuls : qu’ils se citent en justice les uns les autres.
39EN: And if you inquire after any other matter, it may be decided in a lawful assembly.
39FR: Si vous avez quelque autre réclamation, on en décidera dans l’assemblée légale.
40EN: For we are even in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no man guilty (of whom we may give account) of this concourse.
40FR: Nous courons risque, en effet, d’être accusés de sédition pour aujourd’hui, car il n’existe aucun motif qui nous permette de justifier cet attroupement. » Ayant parlé ainsi, il congédia l’assemblée.
41EN: And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.
